'You don’t belong in this neighbourhood'

15 January 2016, 21:45

Windhoek - A Namibian security firm owner has landed himself in court over an assault that was alleged to have been racially motivated, New Era has reported.

Hendrik Burger, owner of Swatkopmund-based company, First Response Security, was arrested on Monday following an attack on an engineer in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The engineer, Jordan Dengeinge, who is a senior manager at the Husab mine, alleged that he was attacked by Burger while attempting to enter his home in an upmarket suburb in northern Swatkopmund.

Dengeinge accused Burger of calling him the "k-word" after he also said that black people "do not belong in such an upmarket neighborhood". Burger then proceeded to handcuff him before calling officials from Nampol to arrest him. Shortly after arrival, police requested that Burger un-cuff the man.

The attack was the latest in a string of racist incidents across the sub-Saharan nation, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment at the lack of reconciliation that seems to plaguing the country.

According to a report by The Namibian, politicians across the country have also joined in on the debate, calling for tougher laws in order to deal with the scourge of racism.
