US president hopeful Carson claims he has Kenyan roots but few believe him

09 December 2015, 19:26

Nairobi - African-American presidential contender Ben Carson has claimed that he has Kenyan and Tanzanian ancestry, Inquisitr.com has reported.

The Republican candidate made the announcement amidst his upcoming African tour, in which he will visit Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia, in a bid to boost his foreign policy credentials.

Carson, a neurosurgeon and author, claimed that his family originateed from the Turkana tribe of Kenya. He said that he will be tracing his ancestry while on his African trip.

The presidential hopeful first made the claim in July, when he likened President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act (ACA) to slavery.

Kenya's Daily Nation, however, on Wednesday lambasted the politician, saying despite his claims that the Turkana tribe were from the "Kenya-Tanzania region", they actually residde in Northern Kenya, almost 1 000km from the Tanzania border.

Carson's "homecoming" has not been without controversy, with political pundits criticising him for attempting to boost his ranking within the continent, as well as gain the favour of the African-American voting public.

Mixed reactions have been received across social media, with some welcoming the American, while others making fun of his claim on African heritage.
