Man faces arrest for 'married women are unfaithful' comment

26 February 2016, 17:04

Cairo - A warrant of arrest has been ordered for an Egyptian Facebook page administrator after he said on live television that a third of married Egyptian women are unfaithful.

The arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday for Taymour el-Sobky, after his comments on talk show Momken caused an uproar on social media, Associated Press reported.

"Thirty percent of Egyptian women are ready for immorality, they just can't find someone to encourage them," el-Sobky said.

“These days, it is very normal for women to cheat on their husbands and seek it out ... Many women are involved in extramarital affairs while their husbands are abroad."

Egypt’s public prosecutor said in a statement that el-Sobky had slandered Egyptian women and damaged their honour.

The show itself was originally aired in December on CBC Egypt, but only sparked fury after it was uploaded online this past week.

Momken, which means “It’s Possible”, was suspended for 15 days.

Possible jail time

A legal expert Tarek Ismail said el-Sobky could be jailed for up to three years if convicted according to Egyptian law, Yahoo News reported.

A masked man appeared in a video on YouTube with an assault rifle and issued a death threat against the embattled administrator.

El-Sobky is the administrator of a Facebook page called "Diary of a suffering man", which has over one million followers.

He apologised in a video last Thursday, saying his words were taken out of context by administrators of Facebook pages in Upper Egypt, The Asian reported.
