Jakarta - An Australian man died while attempting to rescue an Indonesian crew member who fell off a boat during a trip to islands near the capital Jakarta, police said Tuesday.
Gregory Robert Jones, a 41-year-old company director based in Jakarta, was taking a short break in the Thousand Islands archipelago when the accident happened on Sunday.
As his ferry arrived at an island in heavy rain and strong winds, a member of the crew fell into the water while trying to drop anchor, said a local police spokesman.
Another crew member jumped in to save his friend, followed by Jones.

But the Australian suffered serious injuries after being hit by the boat's propeller. He was pulled back on board the boat but later died.
"The victim died while attempting to rescue the boat's crew member, Cecep Sulaiman," the spokesman told AFP.
Authorities are still hunting for Sulaiman. The Thousands Islands are a popular weekend getaway for people living in Jakarta.
