Taiwan fishing boat missing with 49 on board

09 March 2015, 09:31

Taipei - Taiwan has asked for international to help find a fishing boat that went missing in the southern Atlantic two weeks ago with 49 crew, news reports said on Monday.

The Hsiang Fu Chun, a 700-ton squid fishing boat, lost contact on 26 February 26 about 3 148km off the British-administrated Falkland Islands, the Fisheries Agency said.

During the last contact, the crew reported that water was leaking on to the deck.

The crew consists of two Taiwanese, 11 Chinese, 21 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos and two Vietnamese.

"The most difficult part is that no one knows where the boat is," Fisheries Agency spokesperson Huang Hong-yen was quoted as saying by the United Daily News on Monday.

Authorities had asked the Argentine Navy, the EU Naval Force and Britain for help, the Foreign Ministry said.
