'Several fatalities' in Sweden pub shooting

19 March 2015, 10:09

Stockholm - A pub shooting left several dead and wounded in Gothenburg in western Sweden late Wednesday, according to police.

"There was a shooting in a pub. There have been several fatalities and a number of the injured have been brought to hospital," police spokesperson Ulla Brehm told AFP.

"An automatic weapon was used... we can't rule out that it's gang-related. We've had problems for some time with gang crime in this area.

Brehm, though, denied the shooting was a terror attack.

"There is absolutely nothing that indicates terrorism," Brehm told AP.

An eyewitness told tabloid Aftonbladet that two people entered the pub in the Gothenburg suburb of Biskopsgaarden with weapons that looked like Kalashnikovs and started shooting.

"We were sitting watching the football game when the shooters came in," the witness said.

'No chance to think'

Another witness told Swedish broadcaster SVT that two men entered the restaurant and started shooting with automatic weapons, AP reported.

"I didn't have a chance to think about what happened. Then I saw that my friend was bleeding. I tried to stop the bleeding as well as I could with my hand,"the witness told AP, who didn't give his name.

Police said the shooting happened inside a restaurant called Var Krog och Bar, which means "our tavern and bar" in Swedish. According to its website, the restaurant opened in 1995 and also has a sports bar and a night club that's open on Fridays and Saturdays.

On 30 January a man was wounded in a shooting on the square outside the restaurant. It wasn't immediately clear whether the shootings were linked.

Gun violence is not uncommon in Sweden's major cities, though shootings in public places with multiple victims are rare.

"The problems are the same here in Sweden as internationally," Brehm added.

Police have sealed off the area and have launched a murder investigation.
