'Rampant' corruption in Brazil

24 October 2011, 14:34

Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian officials skimmed at least a staggering $37.7bn (around KES 3,8 trillion) from government coffers in just eight years of corruption cases from 2003 - 2010, the daily O Globo reported.

Citing federal documents of the office in charge of trying to recover the funds, the report said only $845m could be recovered.

The figures however pale in comparison to another new estimate: Newsmagazine Veja on Saturday cited the influential Sao Paulo chamber of industries as saying a jaw-dropping more than $400bn is thought to have been stolen from the government and taxpayers in the past 10 years.

Four ministers in President Dilma Rousseff's government have stepped down amid corruption allegations in just three months.

A fifth, Sports Minister Orlando Silva, who is overseeing preparations for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, was accused of corruption last week and is under investigation.

Thousands of Brazilians have taken to the streets in recent protests demanding that government officials be held accountable for their crimes.
