Police arrest Bangladeshi editor

11 April 2013, 17:59

Dhaka - Police arrested the editor of a pro-opposition Bangladeshi newspaper on cyber crime and religious charges on Thursday, the government said.

Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Amardesh newspaper, was arrested in front of his office in Dhaka, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir told reporters.

The editor faces charges of computer network hacking and inciting people by publishing defamatory comments against religion.

Rahman's newspaper in December published a Skype conversation between a judge and a Bangladeshi in Belgium, prompting the resignation of the judge from International Crimes Tribunal.

The court tries those charged with war crimes in connection with Bangladesh's 1971 war against Pakistan.

The charges brought against Mahmudur include attempting to hinder the activities of the tribunal set up in 2010 to prosecute local collaborators of Pakistani forces who committed crimes against humanity during the conflict, police spokesperson Masudur Rahamn said.

The charges also include sedition, conspiracy and hacking a computer system, the spokesperson said.

Rahman had been staying at his office to evade arrest after the government filed a case against him on 14 December for publishing the transcript of the Skype conversations.

He also published in his newspaper anti-Islam remarks posted by atheist bloggers on the internet that hurt Muslim sentiment, the police spokesperson said. The crime is punishable with up to 10 years in jail and a fine.
