NYC officer surrenders to face charges in fatal shooting

12 February 2015, 08:10

New York - A New York City police officer who fired into a darkened housing complex stairwell, killing a man, has surrendered to face criminal charges.

Officer Peter Liang walked into a Brooklyn police station with his lawyer on Wednesday.

He is expected in court on Wednesday afternoon.

His lawyer said previously that Liang was indicted in the November shooting death of 28-year-old Akai Gurley. It wasn't clear what charges the grand jury considered. He could face a misdemeanour official misconduct charge or manslaughter, a felony.

The case was closely watched following the mass protests and calls for reform of the grand jury system nationwide after a New York City grand jury's refusal to indict a white police officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner, and a similar decision in the Missouri killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
