'Iraq, Afghanistan war inspired bombers'

24 April 2013, 16:17

Cape Town – The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing were motivated by the role of the United States in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a desire to defend Islam, the surviving brother has told investigators, according to reports.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whose condition in hospital had been upgraded from "serious" to "fair", specifically mentioned the US military campaigns in Afghanistan, The Telegraph said, citing a Washington Post report.

The 19-year-old was captured by police on Friday after a day-long search for him following the death of his older brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev,  in a shootout with police earlier that day.

The reports also said authorities were investigating whether the two were inspired by Anwar al-Awlaki, the US-born al-Qaeda preacher killed in an American drone strike in 2011, whose online magazine included guidance on making pressure-cooker bombs, the sort used in the Boston marathon attacks.

Three people died and 264 were wounded in twin blasts at the Boston Marathon on 15 April, the deadliest bombings on US soil since the 9/11 terror attacks.
