Hernandez wins Honduras presidential vote

28 November 2013, 13:04

Tegucigalpa - The head of Honduras's electoral tribunal on Wednesday declared conservative Juan Orlando Hernandez the winner of the presidential vote, amid allegations of vote-rigging from the losing leftist candidate.

"These numbers that we released today clearly indicate that the winner of the general election is Juan Orlando Hernandez," said David Matamoros on radio and television, with almost a fifth of the votes still to be counted.

"In the coming days, we will issue the official declaration, once we have added the records that are needed," he added.

With 81.5% of polling stations reporting, Hernandez leads with 35.88% over leftist Xiomara Castro, at 29.14%.

But Castro's campaign alleges the vote was stolen, accusing the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of manipulating 19% of the votes to favour Hernandez.

Her husband, ex-president Manuel Zelaya, who was ousted in a 2009 coup, announced earlier on Wednesday that Castro would call for massive street protests against the alleged fraud.

"For now, we do not recognise the results" that have been given, Zelaya said, insisting that they had been "manipulated, and we are going to prove it."
