Haiti probes killing of human rights activist

13 February 2014, 09:33

Port-au-Prince - Haiti on Wednesday announced a probe into the killing of a prominent human rights activist and his wife in broad daylight.

Daniel Dorsinvil and his wife Girly Lareche were killed by gunmen on Saturday as they returned home from an errand to a bank.

Dorsinvil was the co-ordinator of an organisation called the Haitian Human Rights Platform.

Human rights groups complained that a government official, the secretary of state for public security, had described the attack as just a robbery gone awry. They insist it was an attack against the Haitian human rights movement.

"We condemn any attempt to downplay the investigation", said Antonal Mortime, another senior official at the organisation where Dorsinvil worked.

"No arrests have been made so far but we are going to find the people who carried out this double crime", said Gary Desrosiers, a spokesperson for the national police.

Haitian President Michel Martelly's office issued a statement denouncing "death squads that continue to destroy Haitian families".
