Clinton denounces Arizona 'extremist'

10 January 2011, 16:13

Abu Dhabi - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday denounced the gunman who attacked a congresswoman in Arizona as an "extremist" and called for people the world over to reject radical ideologies.

Clinton, speaking before university students in Abu Dhabi during the taping of a television show, was asked by a presenter why all Arabs should be condemned for extremism when only a handful carried out the September 11 2001 attacks.

She replied that it was not true that all Arabs are demonised and blamed the media for hyping the extremist views of a few.

"We have extremists in my country. We have the same kinds of problems," Clinton said, describing 40-year-old Representative Gabrielle Giffords as a "wonderful, incredibly brave young woman".

Giffords had been meeting with constituents at a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday when a lone gunman fired 31 shots into the gathering, killing six people and injuring 14.

Authorities said Jared Loughner, a 22-year-old booted last year from a community college, has been charged with five counts including murder and attempted murder.

"The extremists and their voices - the crazy voices that sometimes get on the TV - that's not who we are, that's not who you are," Clinton said.

"What we have to do is get through that and make it clear that that doesn't represent either American or Arab ideas," she added.

"So rather than standing off from each other, we should work to try to prevent the extremists anywhere from being able to commit violence, to interfere with the rights of girls to go to school.... That's what the world needs to hear."
