Afghan president condemns Charlie Hedbo cartoon

18 January 2015, 08:55

Kabul - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday strongly condemned the publication of a Prophet Mohammed caricature by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, describing it as great insult to Islam and Muslims.

The news comes three days after the publication of the so-called survivors' issue, which was created in the wake of an Islamist killing spree at Charlie Hebdo's Paris headquarters in which 12 people died.

The cover features a caricature of a weeping Prophet Mohammed holding a "Je suis Charlie" sign under the headline "All is forgiven".

President Ghani described the image as a "disgrace" and its publication as an "utterly irresponsible act," a statement issued by the presidential palace said.

Ghani insisted that freedom of speech has to be used for peaceful coexistence and bringing the religions together, it said.

"For years Afghanistan has - more than any other country - been suffering from war and violence. Thus, this country, better than others, feels the need for peaceful coexistence among all the nations of the world," he said.

The latest issue of Charlie Hebdo hit news stands across the world this week with a print run of 5 million.
