Afghan kills wife who left without asking

12 August 2013, 17:08

Kunduz - A man in northern Afghanistan killed his wife because she had gone to a market without first asking his permission, police said on Monday.

"Khodaidad, a resident of Chardara district, shot his 24-year-old wife on Sunday afternoon just because she had gone to the district bazaar for shopping," district police chief Mohayyudin Khan said.

"The killer ran away after the incident and police have started search operations to find him," Khan told dpa.

Last month, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission expressed concern about a sudden increase in number of cases of violence against women.

More than 700 such cases were reported to the commission in during 20 March 20 to 20 June, about 30% more than during the same period last year.

The commission said more than 240 women were murdered by their own relatives during that period.
