Aerial collision kills Taiwanese air force pilot

21 October 2014, 13:35

Beijing - A Taiwanese air force pilot has died following an aerial collision between two training jets.

One jet was not badly damaged, and the pilot flew it back to base safely.

The other pilot bailed out after the collision Tuesday morning in the southern county of Kaohsiung. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead. The air force identified the dead pilot as 37-year-old Chuang Pei-yuan.

No damage or injuries were reported on the ground. The planes involved were Taiwanese-made AT-3 advanced jets used by the air force's aerobatics team and were on a routine training mission.

Air force academy Superintendent Chang Yan-ting told reporters the cause of the accident was under investigation.
