7 killed in Bali tourist bus crash

19 November 2013, 14:00

Bali - A bus plunged into a ravine while travelling on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, killing seven people, including five Chinese tourists, police said on Tuesday.

Eight people survived the accident, which occurred on a winding slope near Pecatu resort area in southern Bali, said traffic police chief Colonel Beno Louhenapessy.

He said survivors said the bus' engine apparently lost power while going up a hill and the bus rolled backward before falling into a 15m -deep ravine.

Police, soldiers and medical officers used ropes and cranes to reach the bus, which was carrying 13 Chinese tourists. Two Indonesians - a tour guide and the driver - were also killed instantly. The other eight Chinese were all hurt, some seriously, and were taken to a hospital.

Uluwatu is a popular tourist attraction, but serious accidents are rare on the relatively well-maintained roads leading to the area's main resorts.
