Beirut - A leading Syrian activist group says more than 6 000 people were killed in the civil war in March, making it the deadliest month since the start of the conflict two years ago.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday that it recorded 6 005 deaths last month.
The anti-regime group reports on violence and documents deaths through a network of contacts in Syria.
The Observatory said the dead included 298 children, 291 women, 1 486 rebel fighters and army defectors and 1 464 government soldiers.
The rest were unidentified civilians and fighters.
