3 killed in abandoned French factory fire

13 May 2013, 14:24

Paris - A fire at an abandoned French factory killed three people, two women and a child, who were among a group of Roma squatters, authorities in the south-eastern city of Lyon said on Monday.

The fire, which broke out shortly after midnight on Sunday, gutted the offices of the former industrial motors factory, causing the stairs to collapse. Rescue workers found the bodies of the three victims amidst the ruins.

The death toll could rise further, according to the fire service and local prefecture.

Between 200 and 300 Roma, including a number of pregnant women, were believed to be living in the two-storey building at the time of the fire.

Thousands of Roma from south-eastern Europe live in makeshift settlements dotted around France.
