3 killed in Nepal elephant attacks

02 August 2013, 15:31

Kathmandu - Three people were killed in separate attacks by elephants in Nepal, local media reported on Friday.

A 75-year-old woman was trampled to death in the south-eastern plains of Sarlahi district when a herd of wild elephants entered human settlements in the middle of the night Thursday, the reports said. The elephants also damaged property in the village.

In the eastern district of Morang, a 63-year-old man was reportedly killed while he was gathering firewood.

A 16-year-old man was trampled to death while foraging for mushrooms in the south-western plains of Bardiya district, the reports said.

Incidents of villagers getting killed in elephant attacks have risen in Nepal in recent years as human settlements have extended into forest areas.
