Kampala - Police in Uganda are holding a woman who was allegedly caught red-handed while selling her three-weeks-old baby.
Christine Atumuhiire, 30, who is a resident of Madudu village reportedly attempted to sell the baby to a witchdoctor for sacrifice.
According to area police commander, Latiff Zaake, Atumuhiire approached the traditional healer and told him that she has a baby she wanted to sell off.
The witchdoctor reported her to police and a trap was laid to arrest her.
''The witchdoctor asked her if she did not mind even if the child was to be sacrificed and she said she did not,'' Zaake said.
She said that she was selling the baby at UGX 20 million because she was tired of living in poverty.
After the traditional healer reporting to police, Zaake told him to tell the woman that he did not have money to buy the baby but could get her a buyer.
''I pretended to be a witchdoctor interested in buying her baby. We agreed to meet at a hotel in Mityana town. When she came with the baby ready for the transaction, we arrested her,'' explained Zaake.
He condemned the act and thanked the witchdoctor for reporting the woman to police.
He advised other traditional healers to do the same if approached by similar people.
