Wenger: Second place not good enough

16 May 2016, 20:25

Nairobi - Despite pipping rivals Tottenham Hotspur to second place with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has had another season of .

A hat-trick from Olivier Giroud and a late own goal from Villa goalkeeper Mark Bunn, who deflected the ball back across the line after Mikel Arteta hit the crossbar on his final appearance for the Gunners, saw them end their Premier League campaign with a routine win at the Emirates Stadium.

The victory was especially sweet for Gunners fans as it was coupled with a 5-1 defeat for bitter rivals Spurs away to Newcastle United, meaning that Arsenal have now finished above their north London enemies for the last 21 years.

"It was good to have our fans happy and everybody happy from a fantastic game," he said.

"It was a good finish to the season. We finished second in the league and it was not what we wanted. We know what our step is now, last year we finished third and this year second, so hopefully we can go one better next season.

"I think it is not a disastrous season, but it sets the target for what we want to achieve and we have to add something to get first place. There were a few home points which we should not have dropped and as well I think we are short of a few goals in the number we scored.

"We don't start the season feeling we want to finish above Tottenham. Obviously we do, but on this occasion you play with the target you have.

"On this occasion the only target before the game was to finish second. For a while our supporters were not going home happy. Today they had some satisfaction."
