Van Gaal hits out at 'the legends'

16 May 2016, 17:00

Cape Town - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has criticised the media and a section of the club's former players for constantly speculating over his future at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has been the subject of near constant criticism, with his transfer business and squad selection being called into question on a weekly basis.

And the former Netherlands boss feels the speculation over his future has been fuelled by the media as well as "the legends", amidst reports linking Jose Mourinho with the manager's job at Old Trafford.

"Of course all this speculation about my future for six months makes me angry. I have shown that many, many times," Van Gaal said.

"You are asking and you know already my answer! It's rhetorical, I think.

"I have shown that and I am an open book for everybody.

"I have said that, but in spite of the attacks of the media - and not only the media, the legends and other kinds of people - I am here and I am fighting.

"And I believe in myself. I believe in Manchester United. I believe in the players.

"I hope that everybody is believing like me, then it is much more easier."

Van Gaal is believed to be referring to former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes, who has been critical of Van Gaal's reign on more than one occasion.

United trail cross-town rivals Manchester City by two points in the league standings ahead of the final round of fixtures on Sunday. The Red Devils must claim all three points against Bournemouth if they are to stand a chance of beating the Citizens to a fourth-place finish.
