Tottenham eases to 4-1 win over Colchester in FA Cup

30 January 2016, 19:38

London — Tottenham eased to a 4-1 victory at Colchester United to reach the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday, after a clash of heads left one of the home side's defenders in hospital.

Colchester said Alex Wynter suffered a deep cut in his mouth and was slightly disorientated, but "otherwise doing OK" after colliding with teammate Tom Eastman in the opening minutes.

With Eastman later substituted because of his injuries, leaving the hosts without both its first-choice central defenders, Spurs broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. Erik Lamela split the Colchester defense with a diagonal ball and Nacer Chadli smashed home a superb shot from the edge of the area. Colchester, which is bottom of England's third tier, then managed to keep the Premier League title contenders at bay until midway through the second half - when Eric Dier scored with a deflected shot.

Chadli added his second of the game with a near-post header in the 78th, but Colchester's efforts were rewarded when Gavin Massey's shot came back off the post and Tottenham defender Ben Davies turned the ball into his own net. Tom Carroll added Spurs' fourth in the 82nd minute from close range.

Arsenal hosts Burnley and Manchester City travels to Aston Villa in the pick of the mid-afternoon kicks-offs, while Liverpool rounds off the day's fourth round action at home to West Ham.
