Super Eagles sink deeper in FIFA ranking

08 April 2016, 15:35 Israel Ojoko

Lagos - Super Eagles’ inability to beat Egypt in two 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the failure to qualify for the tournament have seen the team sink five places in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday.

Nigeria, who played a 1-1 draw with Egypt in a first leg game in Kaduna, before losing 1-0 in Alexandria, is now placed in 67th position as against last month’s 62nd spot.

The Super Eagles also slipped three places on the continent, moving from 11th to 14th place in Africa.

Cape Verde slipped from 1st to 6th place on the continent, with Algeria now sitting at the top.

They are trailed by Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal and Egypt in the top five places, while Cape Verde, Tunisia, Congo DR, Guinea and Congo complete the top ten teams.

Globally, 2014 FIFA World Cup runners-up Argentina are the new team at the top. La Albiceleste’s recent performances in World Cup qualifying have helped them end Belgium’s five-month-long reign at the summit of football’s world ranking which began when the Red Devils snatched pole position from Argentina back in November 2015.

Close behind, Chile move into third (up two places), Colombia fourth (up four) and Uruguay jump to ninth (up two) to strengthen the South American grip on the top ten.
