Sterling responds to 'unfair' criticism

13 September 2016, 13:47

Cape Town - Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling feels he has been unfairly criticised in recent times, but says manager Pep Guardiola has helped him bounce back this season.

The 21-year-old joined the Citizens for an initial fee of £44 million prior to the start of the 2015/16 campaign, and went on to enjoy a fairly productive season.

He went on to make 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 times and providing eight assists - a record which is comparable to his last season at Liverpool.

However, the youngster received widespread criticism for his performances throughout the season, and was again on the receiving end of some more critical analysis following England's Euro 2016 elimination at the hands of minnows Iceland.

While he admits it has been a frustrating situation for him to contend with, Sterling says Guardiola has helped him to rediscover his confidence this season.

"I have had unfair criticism. Last season I made my mark in the Champions League and I equalled my best scoring season," Sterling said.

"Unfair criticism does put you down a little bit. No-one says I am willing to do my best for club and country. At times it is frustrating.

"Pep [Guardiola] has been a massive help. I spoke to him before and he said he watched me at Liverpool. He has made me stronger."
