Nairobi - Sportpesa has suspended the sponsorship of Kenyan Premier League (KPL) giants AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia over incidents of hooliganism witnessed in recent matches.
In report on Soka, the betting firm confirmed the move and says that it comes in the wake of ugly scenes of hooliganism that caused the abandonment of the Round Ten Kenyan Premier League clash pitting AFC Leopards against Ulinzi Stars at the Mumias Stadium.
Earlier on in Round Nine, a similar case was witnessed at the Nyayo Stadium where a Gor Mahia fan roughed up a match official following the 0-1 loss to Tusker.
Speaking to the press, Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karuri confirmed the recent development stating that it is part of concerted efforts to curb the vice that has dogged Kenyan football for a long time now.
"This is not harsh at all. As sponsors, what I would like us to think about is if a death occurs in the stadium or somebody is critically injured the damage that will be done to football and the brand will be irreversible. As responsible sponsors instead of waiting for that day to come, we would rather act now, we sit down with the club officials and agree on ways to deal with this then sponsorship can continue," said Karuri.
