NY Red Bulls not interested in Schweinsteiger

10 October 2016, 14:21

Cape Town - New York Red Bulls have no interest in signing out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, according to Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, Oliver Mintzlaff.

The former Germany international, 32, has been consigned to United's reserve team since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

And, with his first-team prospects not expected to improve this season, Schweinsteiger has been linked with a move to MLS in the United states.

New York Red Bulls was recently mooted as his next potential destination, but Mintzlaff has moved to dismiss such notions.

"Schweinsteiger is a great player who has had an amazing career," Mintzlaff told Bild.

"But there are no talks [over a move to New York RB]. He is not an issue for us and he will not become an issue."

While New York Red Bulls seemingly have no interest in acquiring Schweinsteiger's services, there could be several other MLS teams who are keen.

MLS chief Don Garber indicated as much when he revealed that Schweinsteiger would be welcomed to the MLS "with open arms".

"We would welcome Bastian with open arms," Garber told Kicker.

"We know him from the 2014 World Cup, when he played against the USA. Plus he played an All-Star game here with Bayern. We are keeping a close eye on his situation."
