No Rooney, Drinkwater gets England call

18 March 2016, 01:37

Cape Town - Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater could be set to earn his first cap for the England national team after being selected in Roy Hodgson's latest squad.

The Three Lions are set to face Germany and the Netherlands in friendlies later in March, when the 26-year-old former Manchester United youth player will be in the squad.

National team manager Roy Hodgson has clearly been impressed with Drinkwater's performances for the Foxes this season, as he has helped his side mount an unprecedented title charge that currently has them top of the Premier League standings.

Drinkwater will join Foxes teammate and Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy in the squad, and will fight for a midfield berth along with Liverpool regulars Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and James Milner; Tottenham duo Eric Dier and Dele Alli; Manchester City star Raheem Sterling; and Everton prodigy Ross Barkley.

Before then, Leicester are back in Premier League action on Saturday, when they will be looking to retain or build on their five-point lead when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

England squad:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Manchester City)

Defenders: Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)
