Nigerian Federation admits it is broke and cannot pay salaries

11 December 2015, 14:30

Lagos - After months of speculations, the Nigeria Football Federation have officially admitted they are broke.

Confirming this is the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, who said they are currently tied to the 'apron-strings' of the Federal Government.

"You can see the states are begging the Federal Government for bailout funds to pay salaries and it is also affecting the football federation because we are still (financially) tied to the apron-strings of government," Pinnick said.

The Glass House have struggled to pay the salaries of national team coaches, as well as match bonuses and allowances for players stretching over the last four months.

The Super Eagles are yet to be paid their match bonuses for the 2-0 win over Swaziland in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier last month, so also for players of the U23, whom they still owe match bonuses from the All Africa Games last September.

National team coaches are also being owed, with U23 and U17 coaches, Samson Siasia and Emmanuel Amuneke respectively coming out to the media about not being paid for months.

As he spoke further, Pinnick admitted they may have to call the coaches to a meeting to explain their financial predicaments.

"We are going through tough times but we are managing. A time will come and if it continues like this, we will have no choice but to call the national team coaches and explain to them that we are tied to the apron-strings of the government.

"What is good for the goose, is also good for the gander. If it's affecting the states, it's also affecting every other area of the economy, so obviously that can also affect us," he added.
