Nigerian billionaire keen to buy Arsenal

22 September 2016, 20:53

Cape Town - Aliko Dangote has reiterated his desire to buy a controlling stake in Arsenal, but only in three to four years when conditions are right for a purchase.

The 59-year-old Nigerian businessman, who owns the Dangote Group and is worth an estimated £8.3billion, is a keen Gunners fan and first stated his intention to snap up the Premier League club last year, however it seems it will be some time before he makes an official bid.

In an interview with Bloomberg he said: "Maybe three to four years. The issue is that we have more challenging headwinds. I need to get those out the way first and start having tailwinds. Then I'll focus on this."

The father of three insists that he will be a hands-on owner at Arsenal and intends to turn the club around, following a number of trophyless seasons.

He added: "It's not about buying Arsenal and just continuing with business as usual.

"It's about buying Arsenal and turning it around. I've run a very successful business and I think I can also run a very successful team.

"Right now, with what we're facing, over $20 billion of projects, I cannot do both."
