Mourinho sets the tone as he talks up United's prospects

06 July 2016, 08:23

Cape Town - New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was officially unveiled at the club during a press conference at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Mourinho takes over from Louis van Gaal, who was relieved of his duties at the helm of the Old Trafford club after the Dutchman failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

His successor, whom himself was sacked midway through last season after his Chelsea side was just a shadow of the one that won the Premier League the year before, wasn't overawed by the significant task of getting the Red Devils back into the big time.

"This challenge does not make me nervous, it comes at the right time in my career. I'm a bit frustrated that I am not playing Champions League. Hopefully, it is only one season we are not there," Mourinho told the media at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"It's a job everyone wants and not many have, and I have it. I know what the fans expect from me.

"This challenge doesn't make me nervous, it comes in the right moment for my career. I have great motivation. I am where I want to be. I want to be in this club, in this county, in the domestic cups.

"Manchester United is a Champions League club. In July 2017, instead of waiting for Europa League play-offs, we make sure this club is where it is meant to be - the Champions League."

Whilst the former Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss has admitted that the fact that England's most successful side isn't in the Champions League is something of a travesty, he won't be satisfied until they are crowned Premier League champions once more.

"I was always much more aggressive in my approach with the risks that obviously can bring. It would be easy, even honest and pragmatic from my side, to focus on we don't qualify for the Champions League.

"It would be quite pragmatic to say let's work and let's try to be back to the Champions League, be back to the top four. I am not good on that and I didn't want to be good on that. I am more aggressive. We want to win."

After he left Chelsea struggling in mid-table half-way through last season, some fans and pundits alike have suggested that the 53-year-old Mourinho might have something of a point to prove by returning to the Premier League.

Mourinho, though, laughed off the idea that he has something to prove to anyone other than himself.

"There are some managers who haven't won titles for 10 years. Some of them never. The last time I won was a year ago.

"If I have something to prove, imagine the others. That's my feeling. I feel that I have to prove not to the others, but to myself. I would never be able to work without success, that is my nature."

With the signings of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic already confirmed and the deal for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan nearly confirmed, Mourinho added that at least one more player will join his squad before the transfer window closes.

"I don't know about changes. The third player will be official soon," he added.

"I am very clear in my approach and model to play and I need specialists in that. I like one or two multi-functional because you need them when you are in a bit of trouble.

"I want specialists. We decided four targets. Until we have the fourth, we are still working hard. Myself, the structure, Mr Woodward, the owners - we are working hard on that. When we have the fourth, I breathe, we all breathe.

"We will not get the fourth on 31st August. We will get it before that and then we are stable."
