Mourinho expected to trim Man United squad

01 August 2016, 14:02

Nairobi - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will continue to tinker with his starting eleven following a game of two halves in Gothenburg on Saturday.

The Red Devils overcame a 2-1 half-time deficit against Galatasaray, with debutant Zlatan Ibrahimovic on target, to win the pre-season friendly tie 5-2, but only after Mourinho had made substantial personnel changes after the break.

The Portuguese is already believed to have parted with nine of last season's squad, but insists all those who featured in Sweden on Saturday night will be in his plans this season.

He told the BBC Sport: "If the players were not in my plans I would not give them one single minute, I would not keep them in my squad.

"The squad is very competitive, the squad is very important for the season.

"We have 38 matches in the Premier League, we have the possibility of 15 matches in the Europa League, plus domestic cups, we are going to play 60 matches. So with 60 matches we cannot do it with 11 players.

"To be in the squad you have to understand that the squad is more important than the individual, the club is more important than all of us, and to be in the squad you have to be ready for this, to play, not to play, play a lot, play less, play 90 minutes, play one minute, not be selected, everything is part of a squad life."

Those who are unlikely to be at the club next season include Bastian Schweinsteiger, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Andreas Pereira, Tim Fosu-Mensah, James Wilson, Adnan Januzaj, Will Keane, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair.

The following started against Galatasaray: David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The following started from the bench: Sam Johnstone, Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Ashley Young, Memphis Depay and Marcus Rashford.
