Nairobi - National team Harambee Stars beat Cape Verde 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi Friday afternoon.
The Stars took the lead after only 9 minutes after Gor Mahia striker Michael Olunga headed in a Clifton Miheso cross for the lead at the break.
They then had a few more chances to add to the lead but Olunga and Johanna Omolo fluffed their lines repeatedly while Captain Victor Wanyama had a shot well saved.
The highly rated Cape Verde side failed to put any serious pressure on the Stars and afterwards head Coach Rui Aguas congratulated the Kenyans for their play.
" Kenya were the better team. They deserved to win," he said.
Harambee Stars coach Bobby Williamson was happy with the win.
" Everyone wrote us off and many people have been very negative but the boys showed they can play," he stated.
The win sees the Stars book a first leg lead ahead of the return leg in Praia Cape Verde on Tuesday, where the aggregate winner will head onto the group stages proper for qualification to Russia 2018.
