Fowler hopeful of victory over United

10 March 2016, 22:46

Cape Town - Liverpool great Robbie Fowler is looking forward to the Europa League clash against Manchester United on Thursday and hopes his former team will come out on top.

The two Premier League giants lock horns at Anfield in the first leg of their last-16 tie, and Fowler says it's going to be a massive game, as the Reds and United have both managed to get back to winning ways recently.

The Merseysiders have not tasted defeat in eight Europa League fixtures on home soil, winning five and drawing three, and Fowler hopes that their positive run in the competition will serve as motivation to Jurgen Klopp's players.

"I'm looking forward to it," the 40-year-old told the club's official website. "It's a massive game. Both of us are not doing as well as we would have liked in the league but we're on a little bit of a roll at the minute so hopefully we'll take our current form and go into this game.

"I hope we come out victors because we deserve a good run. I'm sure United fans and people within the club will be saying the same things about them, but I want us to do well, I want all of our players to be at the top of their game.

"A few of the players have come out and said they owe the fans and they probably do, to be fair. But they've got to try and control the emotions because it is a big game, a big European game, probably the biggest game the Europa League has ever had.

"There are going to be all eyes on it, so the players do really need to control their emotions; we don't want silly cards or silly red cards because we want to be on top of our game with full-strength team."
