Fan trouble, teargas as Harambee Stars AFCON hopes go up in smoke

28 March 2016, 11:08

Nairobi - National team Harambee Stars have been eliminated from the 2017 AFCON qualifiers after losing 1 - 0 to Gunea Bissau at Nyayo National Stadium Sunday.

The visitors completed a double against Stars via a controversial Mendes Suares 83rd minute goal that was protested by Stars players and officials led by goal keeper Arnold Origi.

They won the first leg in Bissau 1-0 on Wednesday.

The Stars contested that the goal had not crossed the line but television replays showed it might just have.

Fans, in protest as well then threw bottles and stones on the pitch which ensured a long delay with policr forced to lob teargas cannisters to disperse the crowd and allow the match continue.

Then the match was completed after the delay.

The Stars only have one point from three games played and are six behind Bissau who they now cannot catch thanks to head to head calculations.

They face Congo and Zambia in their final two group games.
