Chelsea looking to bounce back in League Cup

19 September 2016, 18:56

Cape Town - Chelsea will be determined to put their first defeat under new manager Antonio Conte behind them when they take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in the League Cup on Tuesday.

The Blues were outclassed by Liverpool on Friday to fall to a 2-1 loss and drop out of the top four of the Premier League standings for the first time this season.

The result brought the west London club crashing back down to earth after a wonderful start to life under Conte that saw them win their first four games of the season in all competitions.

However, they have begun to show a few kinks in their armour as they fell to a 2-2 draw to Swansea before the defeat by Liverpool, and they need a result against Leicester to prevent a little blip becoming a definite dip in form.

The Foxes, on the other hand, have been in sublime form of late with two consecutive 3-0 wins, first over Club Brugge in the Champions League and then Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Championship side Nottingham Forest come up against an Arsenal outfit bang in form at the City Ground.

The Gunners have not lost since surrendering the opening match of the Premier League season 4-3 to Liverpool, and claimed an emphatic 4-1 win away from home against Hull City over the weekend.

Prior to the thrashing of Hull, Arsene Wenger's side earned a very credible draw away from home against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and the Tricky Trees will have to be at their absolute best to get anything out of this match.

Everton are flying high under new boss Ronald Koeman and find themselves second in the Premier League standings with five games played, just two points behind Manchester City, who have a perfect record so far in the English top flight this season.

Koeman has been determined to play down links between his side and the Leicester team that won the title against all odds last season, and he will be keen to keep his players' feet on the ground to avoid surprise defeats in games they should be winning, such as their League cup clash against Norwich at Goodison Park.

Preston North End will still be licking their wounds from a calamitous 5-0 hammering at the hands of Brentford in the Championship when they travel to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth on Tuesday.

However, they will take some heart from the fact the Cherries only just managed to overcome Morecambe in the second round of the League Cup and will be hoping their Premier League opponents will still be reeling from the 4-0 humbling at Manchester City on Saturday.

Tuesday's League Cup third round fixtures:

Nottingham Forest v Arsenal, Leeds United v Blackburn Rovers, Bournemouth v Preston North End, Everton v Norwich City, Derby County v Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion v Reading, Newcastle United v Wolverhampton, Leicester City v Chelsea
