AC Milan interested in Giaccherini - report

15 June 2016, 16:09

Cape Town - AC MIlan are interested in securing the services of Italy international and Sunderland forward Emanuele Giaccherini, according to reports.

Giaccherini starred for the Azzurri in their opening Euro 2016 game against Belgium, with the 31-year-old netting the opening goal in Italy's 2-0 victory.

Following a move from Juventus to Sunderland in July 2013, the 31-year-old impressed in his debut season in the Premier League - featuring in 32 games across all competitions for The Black Cats.

The diminutive-winger's influenced waned in his second season at the Stadium of Light, though, as he featured in only 11 games - largely due to an ankle fracture, which resulted in him being loaned to Serie A side, Bologna for the 2015/16 season.

The change of scenery saw Giaccherini return to the form which had prompted Sunderland to pay £6.5m for his services in the first place, as he racked up an impressive 28 appearances and scored seven goals to save Bologna from relegation.

A number of Italian teams, including Torino and Fiorentina, are reportedly in the race to sign the midfielder, with the latest reports from Italy suggesting that Milan have also thrown their name into the hat.

One of Giaccherini’s agents, Giulio Marinelli, has confirmed there are several teams interested in his services.

"There is great satisfaction for the goal, especially for him after a difficult season, coming back to Italy and regaining his national team place," Marinelli told reporters.

"As for the transfer market, I can say there was already interest in Giaccherini before the European Championships."

With only a year remaining on his contract, which is said to be worth around £40,000 a week, Sunderland are expected to sanction Giaccherini’s permanent exit ahead of the 2016/17 season.
