Young stars impress Moyes

30 July 2013, 08:23

Hong Kong - Robin van Persie may have got the biggest cheer when he came on as a substitute in Manchester United's 5-2 win in Hong Kong on Monday, but it was three youngsters who stood out.

Adnan Januzaj, 18, and Jesse Lingard, 20, both climbed off the bench to score against local side Kitchee, the Lingard strike with 10 minutes to go a lovely curling effort with the inside of his boot from outside the box.

That was the midfielder's fourth goal on United's pre-season tour of Asia and Australia and will add to his fast-burgeoning reputation. It also made him the Premier League champions' top-scorer on tour.

Wilfried Zaha, 20, a signing from Crystal Palace, also impressed in patches, especially in the first-half, and his clever reverse pass set up defender Fabio Da Silva to score in a comfortable win on a tricky pitch.

United manager David Moyes, who took over from Alex Ferguson on July 1, said he was delighted "to see a couple of the young boys doing well, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj, who I didn't know as much about.

"And Wilfried Zaha, who has only just joined, has shown what he's capable of.

"So I think they will go away from the trip feeling they've come here and contributed to it."

United now head back to Britain after playing pre-season matches in Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.
