Van Persie: We'll keep our title

14 August 2013, 17:10

London - Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is optimistic his side can defend their English Premiership title this season.

The former Arsenal skipper was on target with both goals as the Red Devils triumphed, 2-0, over Championship outfit Wigan in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The Dutch-international enjoyed his maiden season in 2012/13 at the Theatre of Dreams, finishing as the Premiership's golden boot winner with 26 goals and grabbing his first ever league title in top flight football.

According to the GiveMeSport website, the 30-year-old target man also hinted that United need to hold on to their England striker Wayne Rooney in order to defend their crown.

“I feel that for United to retain their title, they must hang on to Wayne Rooney” said Van Persie.

Rooney, 27, has been linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea who already failed to lure the unsettled striker on two occasions during the current transfer window, with their newly appointed Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, not willing to throw the towel “just” yet.

United, now under the management of David Moyes after the retirement of long serving manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will commence their season away to Swansea on Saturday, August 17.

Kick-off is at 19:30 EAT.
