United have 'massive chance', says Young

02 April 2014, 19:24

Manchester - Manchester United winger Ashley Young believes that his side have a "massive chance" of reaching the Champions League semi-finals after drawing with Bayern Munich in their quarter-final first leg.

United belied their desperate domestic form to hold the reigning European champions to a 1-1 draw in Tuesday's game at Old Trafford and Bayern will be without both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez due to suspension in next week's return leg.

Schweinsteiger was sent off in the dying stages after being shown a second yellow card for a foul on Wayne Rooney, while Martinez triggered a ban by being booked for a challenge on Javier Hernandez.

Bayern's away goal, scored by Schweinsteiger in response to a 58th-minute header by Nemanja Vidic, means that they remain favourites to progress, but Young says that his side will travel to the Allianz Arena without fear.

"I can't wait to go to Munich. We have given ourselves a massive chance," said the England winger, who was a second-half substitute in the game.

"I think everyone would have taken that result before a ball was kicked. It sets us up nicely for the second leg. It was a great team performance and we look forward to the second leg now.

"Everybody wrote us off before the game, but we created many chances. We know they are a good team, but we knew we would get chances on the counter-attack. We managed to do that and got the goal.

"Schweinsteiger is going to be a miss for them. Martinez will be as well. But we have to concentrate on ourselves and put on a performance."

United saw only 30 percent of possession in the game, prompting Bayern winger Arjen Robben to observe that the match was "almost like handball".

However, the hosts also created several presentable chances, including a first-half one-on-one for Danny Welbeck that the 23-year-old could only chip tamely at Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Midfielder Michael Carrick admitted that it was a squandered opportunity that United may come to regret, but he refused to blame his team-mate.

"That is the one that sticks out," Carrick said.

"It would have been great if it had gone in, but as it happened we managed to go 1-0 up anyway. Who knows what would have happened. It was a chance he would normally take."

On United's chances of reaching the last four for the first time since 2011, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder urged caution.

"We are not getting carried away," Carrick said. "The task ahead of us is tough. We will have to be right at our best to get the right result.

"But we still have a chance. We still believe we have a chance. We can go over there really positive."
