Tusker's Were humble in big victory

21 July 2014, 15:20

Nairobi - Tusker FC striker Jesse Were says they took inspiration from Gor Mahia's misfortune to overcome Nakumatt in their Shield Cup last-32 clash.

They thrashed the second tier side 6-2 to move to the next round, a day after GFC 105's shocking victory over reigning KPL champions Gor.

The Brewers scored five of the goals in the second half, after going into the half-time break tied at 1-1.

Were said that their team-talk made the difference, as they were determined to avoid suffering the same fate as their league rivals.

"Winning this game was very important to us and we took lessons from Gor Mahia's game against GFE 105," the Tusker marksman said.

"We could not let complacency creep in because we knew we are the favorites, and at half-time with the tie balanced at 1-1 we spoke about it and agreed to give everything.

"I am happy that we won it and we will just take a game at a time even as we eye a treble. The journey is still long and we will not let anything get into our heads," he added.

Tusker are in the running to complete a historic treble, as they are also involved in the Top Eight - where they are the reigning champions - and currently occupy second place in the league table.
