Thika end Sofapaka's winning run

17 October 2011, 11:13 Fred Maingi

Underdogs Thika United staged a scintillating performance to shock Sofapaka 2-1 in a thrilling Kenya Premier League tie played at Thika Municipal Stadium.

The home team drew first blood barely after four minutes when Francis Kahata poked the ball home from a goal mouth melee.

Sofapaka levelled scores on 13 minutes through Harambee Stars winger Bob Mugalia after combining well with John Barasa.

Thika regained the lead on 58 minutes Kenneth Wendo’s rasping shot proved too much to handle for goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng to handle. Following the win, Thika climb to ninth with 34 points while Sofapaka stay third on 39 after losing their first match in five.

Sofapaka team manager Jack Njarambe admitted they lost fairly.

“We have not thrown in the towel. The fight is still on. We have five more matches remaining which if we win, we can reduce the gap on the leaders. That Ulinzi Stars also lost has given us some breathing space,” observed Njarambe.
