Spahic faces ban over middle-finger gesture

31 March 2014, 22:24

Berlin - Bayer Leverkusen's Bosnian international defender Emir Spahic risks a one-match ban for giving the middle finger sign to Eintracht Braunschweig's Iranian goalkeeper Daniel Davari during Saturday's Bundesliga clash.

Spahic could be punished by the Germany Football Federation (DFB) "for the flagrant anti-sporting gesture" based on photos taken during during the 1-1 draw.

The DFB confirmed that Spahic, 33, will appear before a disciplinary commission and that probes have also been opened into the behaviour of coaches Gertjan Verbeek (Nuremberg) and Thorsten Lieberknecht (Braunschweig).

Verbeek blasted the referee as biased following his side's 3-2 loss to Freiburg (3-2), while Lieberknecht was sent to the stands by the referee in his side's match against Leverkusen, his third sending off this season.
