Security tight for league trophy presentation to Gor

30 October 2013, 12:37

Nairobi - The Kenya Premier League (KPL) management has tightened security ahead of the presentation of the trophy to new champions Gor Mahia.

The event is scheduled for Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

With the Nairobi-based side having won their first title in 18 years, the 65 000-seater venue is expected to fill to capacity.

“The Green Army” has the largest fan base in the country and these are expected to turn out for the rare spectacle.

There are fears the excited Gor Mahia fans might ruin the ceremony especially if they run onto the pitch during the presentation of the trophy as was case during the presentation of the GOtv Shield Cup and FKF Cup last year.

The Kenya Football Federation has also added its voice to the call for tight security measures to ensure safety of players, match officials, fans and dignitaries who will attend the match.

Sources close to organizers of the ceremony indicate that Gor had initially requested that the ceremony be held on Saturday but the organizers remained firm that the match and the ceremony will both be held on Sunday as planned.

The sponsors of the league, the East African Breweries Limited, alongside broadcast partners, SuperSport, have been finalizing arrangements for the big day.

Kenya Commercial Bank will host the new champions.
