Robson backing for Rooney

London - Manchester United legend Bryan Robson believes Wayne Rooney should be England's new captain following Steven Gerrard's retirement from international football.
Gerrard called time on his England career on Monday following the Three Lions' dismal showing at the World Cup, leaving a relatively young squad without a captain.
And while the former Red Devils skipper Robson has expressed his concern at the lack of potential candidates available to succeed the 32-year-old, Robson believes Rooney is the most obvious choice for England boss Roy Hogson.
"You look at all the candidates and there’s not many about," Robson told Sky Sports.
"For years you have always had two or three players who could actually be England captain but at the moment I don’t see a standout one.
"Wayne Rooney is our best player as far as I’m concerned at this moment in time and maybe Wayne is the one who will get the armband."
Robson also commented on the current state of affairs at Old Trafford and stressed the importance of replacing veteran defenders Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, who have joined Inter and Juventus respectively.
