'Robinho' succumbs to Mombasa mosque fracas

06 February 2014, 13:40

Mombasa - Black Dragon soccer star Forwadi ‘Robinho’ Abdalla who was shot by police during last Sunday's skirmishes at Masjid Musa Mosque in Mombasa died Wednesday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Dragon club official confirmed Robinho succumbed at noon after spending three days in the intensive care unit at Agha Khan Hospital.

On Sunday, police opened fire on Muslim youth at the mosque which has been linked to Islamic extremism and terror group al- Shabaab by the government.

Robinho was caught in the melee and shot using live bullets on the head as well as the chest. He was rushed to Agha Khan hospital where he has been on life support.

Robinho was laid to rest Thursday morning in an emotional burial at Kikowani cemetery according to Islamic rites.

Immediately after the burial, angry mourners caused chaos on the streets and once again engaged the police in running battles and forcing the law enforcers to lob teargas canisters.

Black Dragon football club participates in the South Coast Provincial league, the fourth tier of Kenyan football.
