24 February 2015, 11:38

Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian police said Monday they made 118 arrests, including 19 minors, after clashes between rival groups of fans following Sunday's Rio state league match between Fluminense and Vasco da Gama.

Police told AFP most of those arrested were detained after fighting broke out near the Engenhao stadium in northern Rio before the game which Vasco won 1-0, adding the majority were known troublemakers from organized groups including Fluminense's 'Young Flu' hardcore supporters.

Globo daily noted the group had been served with a stadium ban last October.

A second clash, between rival Vasco groups, saw 36 fans arrested.

Police said they had confiscated a range of projectiles and weapons, including pepper spray, metal bars and flares.
