Police gun down fan in Nigeria

26 April 2013, 09:10

Johannesburg - The Nigerian Premier League clash between Kano Pillars and Heartland was called off before half-time after a fan was shot by police following crowd trouble at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

According to the Football411 website, a fiery encounter between NPL leaders Kano and seventh-placed Heartland on Wednesday boiled over after 30 minutes when a certain section of supporters became embroiled in a clash with security officers, resulting in a home fan being shot.

The referee immediately brought a halt to proceedings, but did look to restart things after Pillars returned to the field of play some time later, although the visitors refused to continue, citing security concerns.

The match was subsequently abandoned.

The condition of the gunshot victim is unknown, although the League Management Company, the institution that oversees the country's top-flight, is expected to make an official statement within the next few days.
