Origi Snr proud of son Divock's exploits

17 July 2014, 13:55

Nairobi - Mike Okoth Origi has spoken of his pride after seeing his son Divock Origi make a name for himself at the recently concluded World Cup.

During his professional footballing career, Origi Snr played for Tusker FC before leaving Kenya for Omani side Boshar FC, but ended up in the Belgian Pro League, where he starred for Racing Genk.

The now 46-year-old could not hide his delight when discussing his son's exploits in Brazil, where the Lille forward netted his first goal for Belgium in the 1-0 victory over Russia which sealed his side's progress to the last 16.

"Divock playing in the national team is a great joy (for me)," the former Harambee Stars striker told Daily Sport. "To play and score at the World Cup was special.

"Making it in Europe is never easy. We tried to give him the best upbringing and as parents it's great seeing your child hit such heights."

He added that he was honoured to see other Kenyan stars, such as Victor Wanyama, playing their trade in top European leagues.

"When I came to Europe, it was hard. I was young and knew that I hard to work hard and exhibit high levels of discipline to succeed.

"Looking back, I am happy that my move opened doors for other Kenyan players," concluded the man known as 'The Magic'.

The 19-year-old has been linked with a move away from Ligue 1 outfit Lille, but manager Rene Girard said that he ahs no intention of letting go of the marksman.

"Divock Origi will be here (at Lille) this season," Girard recently told reporters.
